July 6-18 - Genomics Conference at Amherst College - Nevin had the opportunity to join other New England teachers at a 2-week workshop entitled "Biology in the Genomic Age." It was a fantastic opportunity for getting up to date on cutting edge science.
June 25 - Assabet Technical Regional High School - At the "Connecting for Success" Conference, Nevin gave a case-based lesson demonstration entitled "The Usual Suspects of the Microbial World."
April 11 - University of Massachusetts Medical School - Nevin spoke at the Health Career Pathways Conference on how health care topics could be integrated into the science curriculum. Later in the conference he presented an epidemiology lesson demonstration.
April & May - "Account of Events" Gallery Opening at Greenfield Community College. Three Dr. Birdley originals were displayed at the "Account of Events" Cartoonists' Art Show at Greenfield Community College.
March 30-31st - Dr. Birdley at NSTA - Nevin was at the Incentive Publications / Frogstreet press booth to sign books, draw some of his beaked characters, and talk about the Dr. Birdley series with teachers from around the country.
January 2008 - Swarthmore website features 'Dr. Birdley Teaches Science' - The Swarthmore
College website features an article that Nevin wrote on how his alma mater helped to lay the groundwork for his work on the Dr. Birdley
series.
September 2007 - Statewide Dept. in Mass. adopts Birdley series -
The Dr. Birdley Teaches Science series
has been purchased by and distributed to all of the educational facilities run by the Massachusetts Department of Youth Services (DYS). The series has also been incorporated into the department's instructional guide for teachers.
August 29 - Springfield Republican - A feature story on Dr. Birdley teaches science ran in the Springfield Republican (a regional daily paper), on the front page of the Health & Science section.
July 21 - Harvard Graduate School of Education - A 90-minute workshop for Educators, titled "Dr Birdley Teaches Science: An Example of Sequential Art in the Classroom," was presented by Nevin Katz at HGSE.
July 21 - Daily Hampshire Gazette - A feature story on the Dr. Birdley series ran in the Gazette, a newspaper based in Northampton, MA. The story also ran in the weekly Amherst Bulletin several days later.
July 15 - Dr. Birdley segment aired on ABC-40. Nevin discussed the origin of Dr. Birdley and how it evolved from his own classroom teaching aid into a series of resource books.
